Pousada de Obidos Hotel – Historical Castle 700-year-old
Sleep inside a real medieval castle with more than 700 years of history.
Part of Pestana Pousadas Portugal, this is one of their jewels, while this hotel group manages 83 great hotels across the globe, including all Pousadas in Portugal.
As they mention, “Love is in the air, in the towers, in the wind and in the walls of Obidos Castle. This venue, converted into a Pousada of Portugal, is one of the most impressive and romantic sites you’ll ever visit, with its huge historical background, its medieval features and its countless legends and love stories.”
The Castle was conquered in 1148 by the first Portuguese Kings to the moorish (North African Arabs, who occupied all this area long time ago.
We got an upgrade upon arriving to their marvelous Superior Castle Room. Featuring double bed king size, they have only two of these very special rooms. On my opinion, they are the best rooms of this beautiful property, located just close to the restaurant, where breakfast is served. These two special rooms are more spacious, with plenty of natural light, and they offer tranquility, silence and room for extra beds, in case you come with your family. The superior castle rooms start only at 216EUR per night.
Above this two rooms, there are just the two suites at the castle towers, completely different and with less area available. These special suites start at 395EUR per night.
Below some photos of the special suite, at one of the Royal Towers (only two available). The look quite impressive, you will feel like Royalty:
The staff from the hotel was nice, but my biggest recommendation goes to Mr Luis Tavares from the reception. His colleagues are just ok, but Mr Tavares is utterly friendly, educated, and helpful, and is always willing to assist you. He will help you park your car (difficult roads inside the castle walls, be advised), and also going up the stairs with your luggage. He is really a great asset for this hotel, and a plus for your stay without any hesitation.
One warning for those with disabilities, make sure you can go up and down several stairs (maybe 20-30), because will be needed, specially if you are staying at the old castle area. They also have the cottages, where I believe no stairs exist.
The breakfast is very quiet and relaxing. Don’t forget the hotel doesn’t have many rooms, and will never be packed. Since we were on top of the towers, our room was just next the restaurant/breakfast. We picked the best table just near the window with a wonderful view over the countryside. Some guests complain the breakfast is not good or diversified. It’s not true. Check some of the photos taken by myself during my stay:
About places to eat, they have their nice restaurant inside the castle, serving great food and nice wines. Some guests report too much time to serve and pricey meals. Indeed, it’s not cheap, and it’s to eat at a relaxed pace. Don’t go to Pousada Restaurant to eat fast, I believe that’s not the idea. There are also other fantastic restaurants around the village, and my biggest recommendation goes to A Nova Casa do Ramiro. The place is awesome, the owners Pedro and Carla are friendly, knowledgeable and educated, and most important the food is delicious, and nice selection of wines. Here is their contact page on facebook, and it’s currently the number one in Obidos on Tripasdvisor. During our short stay, we have eaten there twice. Make sure to reserve in advance, they get busy quickly.
There is also plenty of things to do while in Obidos. You can stroll around the village, see the beautiful shops around and visit the castle in detail. You have also the options to visit Nazare fisherman village just 30min drive north, Alcobaça Monastery and Batalha. These three can be see in one full-day tour around the area, and will give you a great day full of history and beautiful landscape.
