I was planning for a long time a visit to Royal Cocoa Company Palace (Palacete da Real Companhia do Cacau), and had the chance to visit this wonderful place last month.
It’s located 1hour from Lisbon, in a small village of Alentejo called Montemor-O-Novo (close to the famous Land and Vineyards Michelin Restaurant and hotel).
Built on a palace from the 19th Century, it’s the first and only palace hotel in the world, with a chocolate factory inside.
It’s a great place to stay based to visit Alentejo, specially cities such as Montemor, Arraiolos, Evora, and much more, and a wonderful surprise.
The owners, Moises and Sandra, bought the old palace property back in 2010, with the dream of restoring the building, and making a charming/boutique hotel, with a chocolate factory inside. The idea came with a trip they did to New Zealand, and found a chocolate factory located in a very small property. They realized that was not needed a huge complex, to produce 20.000 chocolates per hour (their current potential production).
At our arrival to our extended weekend, we were welcomed by the staff (two girls, plus Antonio), who immediately offer an earlier check-in to our suite, and after a quick conversation, they invited us to upgrade to one of their best suites, with a bath. The Suites are extremely large, I would say something around 50sqm, very rare to find. Amenities provided on the suites by Hermès. This boutique hotel has only 7 rooms, so you will never feel very busy or crowded, it can never be!
While the rooms are detached from the main palace, the original property itself is magnificent. Reception, breakfast and living rooms, and also two of the suites are located inside the old palace building. The restoration was very well done, and decoration very classic and light.
Everyday between 5PM and 6PM, it’s served a tea time, inside the palace with chocolate offers from their factory, including also tea and cocoa drinks.
Due copyright/industrial rights, the chocolate factory could not be photographed, but although being able to produce approximately 20.000 chocolates per hour, the factory doesn’t occupy more than 150sqm.
As mentioned earlier, this is a great location as a base for daily visits to other places nearby, such as Evora, Arraiolos, Estremoz, etc.
There are plenty of restaurants and options to visit across this locations, just let me know if there is any help or suggestions needed, and will be glad to assist you.
It was a wonderful stay at the Royal Cocoa Palace in Montemor and would say definitely one of the best places I have stayed in my country, Portugal.
The prices vary depending on the season and room chosen, but average between 175 and 225EUR per suite.
Would definitely return here again and will be recommending to my friends and family.
